Frequent Coaching Questions

Coaching is a professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organizations, helping them to bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be. Coaches partner with their clients to design the life they want, bring out their clients’ own brilliance and resources so that they can achieve excellence and create purposeful, extraordinary lives. By creating clarity, coaching moves the client into action, accelerating their progress by providing greater focus and awareness of all the possibilities that exist to create fulfilling lives.
If you are looking to make a change in improving your overall performance in life and create a more purposeful life full of passion and happiness but are at a loss as to how to make this happen, then having a life coach is for you. If you are looking to vent about your past or current life situations or are dealing with complex issues such as addiction, mental health, eating disorder, trauma etc., counselling would be more appropriate.
It depends on your level of self awareness, willingness to engage in change, and goals you want to pursue. Some clients are able to achieve their goals in as little as one to three months. A coach will work towards reducing your dependency on the need for coaching sessions by building your resources and teaching you how to effectively engage in life challenges on your own as well as, within your support network.
Coaching is a solution-focused process that helps you to clarify what you want and determine the steps you need to take to achieve it. Coaching helps one to find and sustain personal motivation while maintaining focus. There are five simple coaching stages.
1. Clarifying what you want (appreciating constraints and things outside your control; and understanding why it is important to you).
2. Defining the steps you need to take to achieve your goal (create an action plan that is realistic and practical).
3. Building and maintaining the commitment to getting what you want (developing a vision and helping you appreciate its importance; linking the various steps you need to take to achieve that vision; creating an experience of what it would be like to complete that journey).
4. Measuring your progress (identifying and overcoming barriers; defining the milestones to help you check you’re on track).
5. Celebrating your success (acknowledging your success with each step you take toward where you want to be).
The same limits to confidentiality apply to life coaching as they do to clinical counselling. As a registered clinical counsellor I am ethically responsible for full confidentiality without a signed release of information form. However, there are the following exceptions to confidentiality:
1) When disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the client and or others;
2) When legal requirements demand that confidential material be revealed; and
3) When a child is in need of protection
